MOULIN ROUGE AUTHOR LA MURE SENDS A SERIES OF LETTERS PIERRE LA MURE (1909-1976). La Mure was a French author best known for writing Moulin Rouge that also spawned a movie of the same name in 1952. His other works included Beyond Desire, Clair de Lune, and The Private Life of Mona Lisa. An archive of four letters from La Mure to his friend Boris: a) ALS. 1pg. 7 ¼†x 7 ¾â€. No Date. No Place. An autograph letter signed “Pierreâ€: “Hurry up! Come here where people are nice, the sky is blue, women are obliging and your friends are waiting.†Written on La Mure’s personal letterhead, the letter is in fine condition. b) TLS. 1pg. 7 ¼†x 10 ½â€. August 20, 1957. Rome, Italy. A typed letter signed “Pierreâ€: “Thanks for your letter written in the sky. I just saw Lia the other day and we spent all our time speaking about you. She really is a charming person and you’ve no idea what a deep impression you made upon her. As for myself I won’t rest until I know that you have had your check-up at the hospital and are perfectly all right. Lisa, who is typing this letter, (so badly) sends her love to you. She also thinks you’re a very nice person, which proves that most women don’t know a wolf when they see one. Are you contemplating returning to Rome? It would make life very pleasant to have you around. In short, we all miss you.†With a personal note from the typist, Lisa, at the bottom, the letter is in fine condition, with some staining at the lower-right corner. c) TLS. 1pg. 7 ¼†x 10 ½â€. September 18, 1957. Rome, Italy. A typed letter signed “Pierreâ€: “Two lines in haste to thank you for your letter of August 30. What you tell me about the playing fountain in Miami is very exciting. I’m sure you will do the best playing fountain in the whole of the United States. I will tell you more on the subject but Lisa who is typing this letter is a very innocent girl and I don’t want her to know about certain things. This restricts the scope of my correspondence enormously but also keeps it fit to be sent through the mail. I am planning to return to Beverly Hills by the end of October and stay there until after Christmas. I don’t know what my address will be as I have rented my house. But you can write to me at 707 North Linden Drive, Beverly Hills and it will reach me. Have you been to La Jolla Hospital? And are you all right? I will feel much better when I know that you are in good shape. Please write to me if only a few lines. It’s always wonderful hearing from you. Lia Haby is in Paris and I haven’t heard from her for some time. You can write to her to the American Express.†The letter is in fine condition, with some staining. d) TLS. 1pg. 7 ¼†x 10 ½â€. September 24, 1957. Rome, Italy. A typed letter signed “PL†in pencil: “Where on earth are you? All your letters seem to be written in airplanes or in restaurants or in the most unlikely places. Your last postcard comes from a restaurant in New York when I thought you safely in a hospital in La Jolla. And who the Hell is Cecil Arden who says that she is an enthusiastic ammiratrice of mine and gives me a cock-eyed telephone number in Rome which turned out to be that of a doctor. You certainly associate with the queerest and strangest people. But then you are an artist and I forgive you. Now will you please let me know what will be your address for the next six months? I’m tired of writing and having the uncomfortable feeling that my letters do not reach you. Please sit down and write me a decent letter and if possible an intelligent and coherent one written in simple language that even Lisa who’s writing this letter will be able to understand.†With a sketch by La Mure at the bottom, playfully tagged “I, too, can draw,†the letter is in fine condition.
