Approx 100 Hours of “Off Air” broadcasts from Pirate Radio Caroline (all on 1 MP3 data DVD) These 160+ broadcasts are from the Sixties: in my mind, the greatest age in pirate radio, and pop music too. Though The Seventies and even some of The Eighties weren’t bad! (Please see below for a complete list of the recordings up for auction) Broadcast on a MW frequency and preserved by enthusiasts on Reel-to-Reel tapes, these recordings document an era when pop music was radical and exciting; and Pirate radio stations, led by Caroline, seemed to spread the word of the coming of a revolutionary new musical world. (Where did it all go so wrong?!) It’s hard to overstate how evocative of their time these broadcasts are. Between music, DJs remark on topics of the day, pausing to light cigarettes, whilst adverts promote long-outmoded product; and the music is one long-forgotten song after another. It’s true that, purely on a sound quality basis, these recordings can’t compare to current DAB standards. Vintage is one way to describe the sound quality: transmission strength fluctuates, frequencies drift occasionally causing fade, and there is a general ‘distance’ to the sound - in hindsight, you can really hear that these broadcasts were literally coming from pirate ships, operating off the coast, sometimes even in open seas. But that’s all a part of the magic and history. Maybe it’s nostalgia talking, but to me these recordings pulse with a vibrancy and vitality that today’s music – and today’s DJs – just can’t touch. 1966 04 10 Radio Caroline South 1966 - April 10 (Easter Sunday) -
