Very rare and wonderful, 1812 Document Signed by President James Madison while serving as President of the United States. This fantastic, hand signed document measures approx. 12†x 16 1/4†being a partially printed Land Grant transferring fifteen hundred acres of land northwest of the Ohio River on “Boke’s Creek†being land awarded to Captain Arthur Smith for three years service during the Revolutionary War as Commanding Officer of a Company in the 4th “Virginia Line on Continental Establishmentâ€. It is dated July 20th, 1821 and is issued to "Edward Drorngoole, assignee of Sally Jordan, nee Sally Smith, legal representative of the late Arthur Smith". This very early, Military Warrant Land Grant is printed on vellum and is signed in brown ink by the President “James Madisonâ€. This Land Grant was signed by Madison himself and the signature is not a secretarial or proxy. It was not until the middle of the Andrew Jackson administration that the task of signing Land Grants was relegated to the Commissioner of the General Land Office and this James Madison signature is 100% guaranteed authentic and in the hand of the President himself. This great Signed Document is in very good condition - the manuscript entries are strong but somewhat faded - Madison’s Signature is significantly darker and bolder than the other manuscript entries. The document is printed on heavy vellum stock and has the typical folds and slight waviness associated with these vellum Land Grants. There is some light overall soiling with dark soiling along the very top edge (approx. 3/8†wide strip across the top edge - see the scans below). Overall this is a VERY well preserved Document and displays beautifully. A very rare and much sought after, 1812 President James Madison signature / autograph on a Western States Land Grant and a fantastic addition to any collection!!
