Up for auction is an original Falstaff Beer charger from the Lemp Brewery in St. Louis, Missouri. This is an authentic Pre-Prohibition piece of breweriana and dates to approximately 1917. The backside of the charger is stamped “MANUFACTURED BY THE HAEUSERMANN METAL MFG. CO.†What makes this charger so special??? This particular Lemp charger continued to advertise Falstaff Beer even after the Lemp brewery closed. (The Lemp Brewery closed in 1919 with the onset of Prohibition and never opened its doors again.) When "Papa" Joe Griesedieck purchased the Falstaff trade name and the Lemp shield logo from William J. Lemp, Jr., Mr. Griesedieck also received a quantity of smaller Lemp Falstaff advertising (in the form of sand puzzles, tin signs, etc.) and a number of these 1917 chargers as part of the transaction to become the cornerstone of their point of purchase advertising immediately following Prohibition. The newly formed Falstaff Corporation "recycled" these Lemp Falstaff chargers by blocking out the "LEMP" references with white paint and stenciling-in the "FALSTAFF" name. This charger is one of the few remaining examples of ‘converted’ Lemp chargers. I personally have only seen two other examples of this type of RARE charger. The charger is in overall excellent condition – I would grade it a 9 on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being absolute mint. The charger measures 24†in diameter and has the usual rim nicks and scattered tiny spots and light scratches here and there. There is a minor dent to the backside of the charger in the area of the maiden’s right shoulder however this is barely visible due to the busy graphics in that area as shown in the pictures. The colors are STRONG and without fading. (My experience with this particular scene and other Lemp chargers is that the blue color often is the first to fade and you can gauge the degree of fading from how intense the blues are. The sky in this particular charger is the indicator and this one has strong blue color.) This charger was somewhat difficult to photograph without white flash marks due to the concave shape of the charger. Any white or cloudy areas are due to the reflection of light from the camera flash. Please refer to all the pictures that I have provided. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me. This auction has a very low reserve price which is WELL BELOW its actual value. Don’t let this opportunity to own a RARE piece of St. Louis breweriana history pass you by!! I accept Money Orders, Cashier Checks, and personal checks (held ten days until cleared by bank). No PayPal. Payment must be received within 10 days. Shipping is a flat rate of $20.00 to the continental US. Insurance is optional but strongly recommended. NO INTERNATIONAL SALES.
