This auction is of a well maintained example of a Racal RA17L HF Receiver.The Racal receivers in the RA17 series are widely regarded as some of the all time classic communications sets.These truly excellent receivers, were for many years the preferred choice of the British Government for use in their listening and monitoring stations. Racal’s “flagship†model,the RA17L (the model being auctioned),is widely regarded as one of the best models in the whole series of suberb receivers.It incorporates the famous Wadley Loop,which makes of the RA17L Receiver exceptionally stable. This receiver was maintained maintained by the British Royal Air Force,and as can be seen from the photographs of the interior,it is in good tidy condition. The front panel is very smart and not bent,chipped or damaged in any other way.The engraving is all very crisp and clear. All of the knobs,dials,switches,meter,etc are original and correct. The receiver’s covers have been removed for the purpose of taking photographs.The receiver is in fact complete with its bottom closing panel and fully louvered top dust cover.The receiver powers up on both European and American mains voltages. These receivers tend to go on forever,however,before offering the receiver for sale,the various controls were checked for functionality,and any points of note,recorded, in order that the buyer should have the best possible indication of the condition of the receiver.These were the results. General Test – the receiver is working on all ranges,from 1 MHz to 30 MHz. Calibrator – working, Dial light –working Standby facility - working Cosmetics,etc Two small terminal screws missing from the rear audio outlet panel Some very minor tarnishing of the top surfaces of the aluminium chassis Front panel tidy,all lettering,engraving etc clear,background paint finish good,with a few very tiny age related blemishes Chrome platingon grab handles slightly pitted in parts Racal logo/ front panel badge in good condition. Mains connector upgraded to Euro connector Antenna connector upgraded from Burndept to universal PL259 Type Performance The receiver is extremely sensitive,remarkably so on the upper frequency bands and when I powered it up recently, it was bringing in lots of stations on just a very short length of wire,indoors.I imagine that it would be a superb performer on a good outdoor antenna. Do not confuse this Racal RA17L with the tired and unmaintained examples of RA17 receivers which are often for sale on eBay.Many are poorly maintained,badly aligned and are frequently exceedingly “deafâ€.Bringing such receivers up to specification is a specialised job and costs many hundreds of pounds.By way of contrast, this receiver is in full operational condition and ready to give excellent service to the auction winner. The receiver is complete with its mains connector and lead,together with its antenna lead and Pl259 connector. The opening bid is £265 and there is a buy it now option available for £280.
