Rare Ze'ev Raban "Song of Songs" Album, Bezalel, Jerusalem, Ca 1950 Rare and luxurious Ze'ev Raban "Song of Songs" leather binding album, Bezalel, Jerusalem, Ca 1950. The textured leather cover is mounted with a brass plaque depicting and titled in Hebrew "Queen of Sheba". This edition in English contains many colorful litho illustrations with relevant text, related to the "Song of Songs" book. Marked in Hebrew "Bezalel Jerusalem" as seen in the pictures. Illustrations from this book appear in "Ze'ev Raban, A Hebrew Symbolist", by Batsheva Goldman Ida, published by Tel Aviv Museum of Art, pg. 113, items #148-150. An attractive piece which is an absolute must for any serious Judaica collector. A superb Jewish, Judaica, Hebrew, Israel item. Highly sought after by collectors. Wolf Rawicki, later to be known as Ze'ev Raban, was born in Lodz in 1890. Raban reached Eretz-Israel in 1912 and joined the staff of the Bezalel School in Jerusalem. Raban's acquaintance had been with a European Symbolism that was international, equivocal, and often personal. In Eretz-Israel he created a "Hebrew Symbolism" that was national and carried a clear message. He developed a visual lexicon of motifs based on Jewish designs and topics, and to these he added his own Hebrew calligraphic script and other decorative elements, to form what was to become the "Bezalel style". The Bezalel school was founded in 1906 by Boris Schatz, who shaped its character. His approach stressed both the practical and the ideal. His vision was to develop useful arts and crafts among Palestinian Jews, thereby decreasing the dependence on charity. At the same time, he sought to inspire his students to create a Jewish national style of the arts, in order to promote the Zionist endeavor. This item is part of a huge, high quality and rare lifetime Judaica and silver collection that belonged to the late Israeli collector - Mr. M. Averbuch who passed away last year in Tel Aviv. Although we are familiar with the Israeli Judaica market we were not familiar with this huge and outstanding collection which was anonymously collected since the 1950's. We apologize for the quality of the pictures which were taken not in our studio but in the estate manager's office which we sell this collection on his behalf and under his supervision. The low starting prices were dictated by the estate manager. Measurements : Marks : Height: 32cm. / 12.6in. Width: 25cm. / 9.843in. See item description. Weight : Condition : 1263gr. / 40.6oz.
