Autograph Letter Signed: two pages, 4vo with envelope. On the letterhead of The Princeton Inn, Princeton, New Jersey to Mr. Bruce Kelham. Wilder is planning a visit to San Francisco and hopes to meet Kelham there. Signed, “Thornton”. By the year of this letter, author Thornton Wilder, an instructor of English at Lawrenceville Academy from 1921-1928, had already won his first Pulitzer Prize for his novel, The Bridge of San Luis Rey (1927). His next book, was The Woman of Andros (1930), an interpretation of Andria (The Girl from Andros), written by Roman playwright Terence (Publius Terentius Afer, c. 185-159 B.C.). He would later win two Pulitzer Prizes for Drama: Our Town (1938) and The Skin of Our Teeth (1943). In 1955, Wilder revised his 1939 play, Merchant of Yonkers, as The Matchmaker, which later became the musical, Hello, Dolly! Matted and framed with a copy of a photograph by the prominent photographer, Yousuf Karsh, for a total size of 19” x 23” (there is some wear to the frame).
