YOUR BID IS FOR SET OF SIX CUPS DESCRIPTION: Auction is for one cup made from Authentic Material from the Statue of Liberty, New York. The cup has the legend "CONTAINS AUTHENTIC MATERIAL" printed around the cup in red. Material was obtained in 1986 when restoration took place. Blue vertical stripes suround the cup. A metalic golden color over lay picture of the face of the Statue of Liberty is centerd on two blue stripes the entire circumference of the cup. The logo says LIBERTY 1886 CENTENNIAL 1986. Here is your chance to own a piece of American History. The Cup is more beautiful than the picture. The digital camera distorts the clarity due to the reflection of the high gloss finish and metal overlay of the Liberty cameo. The LIBERTY LOGO is trademarked. The bottom of cup says Made in England in raised letters. These cups were purchased new, carefully wrapped and stored. The cups are listed as new because they have never been used and are in pristine condition. Liberty Enlightening the World, known more commonly as the Statue of Liberty, is a statue given to the United States by France in the late 19th century, standing at Liberty Island in the mouth of the Hudson River in New York Harbor as a welcome to all visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans. The copper statue, dedicated on October 28, 1886, commemorates the centennial of the United States and is a gesture of friendship between the two nations. The sculptor was Frederic Auguste Bartholdi; Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower, engineered the internal supporting structure. The Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable icons of the U.S. worldwide; in a more general sense, the statue represents liberty and escape from oppression. ORIGIN OF THE COPPER Historical records make no mention of the source of the copper used in the Statue of Liberty. In the town of Visnes, near Stavanger, Norway, tradition holds that the copper came from the French-owned Visnes Mine. Ore from this mine, refined in France and Belgium, was a significant source of European copper in the late nineteenth century. In 1985, Bell Laboratories used emission spectrography to compare samples of copper from the Visnes Mines and from the Statue of Liberty, found the spectrum of impurities to be very similar, and concluded that the evidence argued strongly for a Norwegian origin of the copper. BECAUSE OF THE AUTHENTIC MATERIALS IN THE FINISHED DESIGN THESE CUPS SHOULD NOT BE USED IN A MICROWAVE.
