REAL PHOTO STEREO VIEW OF THE JOHNSTOWN FLOOD, MAY 31, 1889, AMERICA'S GREATEST DISASTER OF THE 19TH CENTURY. THE FLOOD WHICH OCCURED IN JOHNSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA WIPED OUT 99 ENTIRE FAMILIES, 396 CHILDREN AND RESULTED IN A TOTAL OF 2209 DEATHS. The flood was caused by the south fork dam giving way. The dam held back Lake Conemaugh of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club, a prestigious club of industrialists and wealthy. The dam was build to contain a lake which was stocked for fishing. The stereoview shows the debris field left by the flood waters with a few buildings left standing. The stereoview is part of a series-American Views. Today an eternal flame burns in the city in memory of the victims of the disaster. Condition- View has some minor soiling but the photo is strong. It is good condtion and is a good photo of the flood's aftermath. VISIT MY STORE FOR MORE PHOTOS, DOCUMENTS, HISTORICAL NEWSPAPERS, POSTERS, PRINTS, FDCs AND OTHER GREAT PAPER STUFF.
