This is a new reproduction Scottish Snail style fire steel or flint striker. This is based on an original pictured in the book The Bryant and May Museum of Fire-Making Appliances: Catalogue of Exhibits from 1926. "… one type, having curious thumb-pieces at top, represented by five examples (nos. 308-312) and unknown in England, was probably introduced from France or Flanders, where it occurs …" The curled end is very similar to one half of a Dutch/Flemish fire steel from the Cherry Hill archeological dig - a 17th century Seneca village site that was used from 1650 to 1680. The Seneca were part of the Iroquois 7 Nations. That Seneca fire steel has a spiral snail type scroll on both ends. I hand forged this up from high carbon spring/tool steel, and heat-treated it to throw a large quantity of sparks when struck smartly with a sharp piece of flint. If you are recreating the persona of someone of Scottish, Flemish, Dutch, or French ancestry, or someone who has been trading with the Dutch or French from the 1600's through 1700's in the Middle to Northern Colonies, or just like old style tools that were used in everyday life, then this is just what you need for your kit. It has the look and style of the originals, and it throws better sparks. Use it everyday to start your cooking fires, or add it to a period trade display. Size is approximately 2 1/2 inch by 1 5/16 inch, and 1/8 inch thick. This will fit into many small tinderboxes. Shipping will be $2 via USPS in the United States and most of Canada, $4 to the British Isles and most of Western Europe, and might be a little more for other areas overseas. Payment is expected within 7 days in US funds - personal check (shipped when check clears), money order, or Paypal (credit cards only through Paypal). I will combine shipping on multiple items. Thank you for your interest in my humble work. It is appreciated.
