This painting is currently in at a private bank in Geneva, Switzerland, where it will be shipped from, insured and at no cost to the winning bidder. In this painting, the Virgin holds a Monstrance containing the Corpus Christi (Latin for Body of Christ). She is framed by the three identical figures of the Trinity. Although this type of representation was forbidden by the Council of Trent, the edict was routinely ignored in Spanish America; where it was thought that the Dove of the Holy Spirit might be misunderstood by the Indians as a sign of animal belief. The red linings of the robes provide a contrast to the central figure’s blue mantle with stars. This is one of several paintings from a collection believed to have been done by Manuel Samaniego; who was active in Ecuador during the end of the Spanish Colonial Period. Samaniego executed very large compositions, (like the one at the cathedral of Quito); but his small works on copper are generally better known. A full catalogue of his copper paintings has yet to be compiled, as most remain in private collections (like the one you are bidding on here). Samaniego work reached clients not only in Quito, but also in Mexico, Bogota, Lima, and Guayaquil; where copper paintings could easily be transported without damage. This painting comes from a private estate collection in Mexico, and was aquired 80 years ago.
