Stereoview-Beach-People Carriages-Newport RI -1860s-busy beach lots of horses and carriages and people-buildings in the distance...photo by Joshua Appleby Williams Newport RI handwritten-"beach". All these stereoviews appear to have belonged to Edward Lawrence Hyde, born in Mystic, Connecticut in 1853, and converted in 1859, studied architectur and then art in New York City with Johannes A. Oertel of the Nation Academy. he was called to the ministry in 1868 and studied at Boston University."That's from a footnote in Ellen Weiss's "City in the Woods", she in turn references Rev. Rennetts C Miller's "Souvenir History of the New England Conference" (1897).He designed the 1878 Trinity Church on the grounds of the Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association. Again Weiss tells us that he was a Methodist minister then assigned to Middletown, RI. Hyde has wrtten his name or intials on many of these cards along with notations...only dates I can find that he has recorded on the cards range from 1864-1870.....
