THOMAS PAINE American Crisis 1777 Rev. War Newspaper ** Genuine Newspaper Containing The Famous Work by Thomas Paine! "THE AMERICAN CRISIS No. III", on the REVOLUTIONARY WAR ! This is the genuine newspaper titled THE CONNECTICUT JOURNAL from New Haven, dated June 25, 1777 * Thomas Paine & his "The American Crisis" The entire front page and a bit of pg. 2 are taken up with a portion of one of the more famous publications from during the Revolutionary War, being "The American Crisis" series penned by Thomas Paine. This was a series of pamphlets published from 1776 to 1783 during the American Revolution by famed author Thomas Paine. The first volume begins with the famous words "These are the times that try men's souls". There were sixteen pamphlets in total, collectively known as "The American Crisis" or simply "The Crisis". This newspaper contains a portion of the "Crisis No. III". The writings were contemporaneous with the early parts of the American Revolution, during the times that colonists needed inspiring. They were written in a language the common man could manage and are indicative of Paine's liberal philosophies. The writings bolstered the morale of the American colonists, appealed to the English people's consideration of the war with America, clarified the issues at stake in the war and denounced the advocates of a negotiated peace. Because of the great length of each pamphlet (full text of "Crisis III" takes 21 pages) no pamphlet is found in total in any single newspaper, but rather were serialized over many editions. This newspaper contains that portion which takes pages 15-19 in a "Word" printout, with the full text of this pamphlet supplied with the issue. One can only imagine what the owner of this actual newspaper thought when reading this newspaper 231 years ago. Was the person inspired by the text of Thomas Paine to support the colonists' cause? Could it have caused the reader to join the Continental army to fight the British? Holding this newspaper is truly holding history in your hands! How has such an issue survived thru the years? This issue was likely kept by a library for many years and may have been deemed out of scope for its particular focus and was "deaccessioned", or made available to the public. Or it is possible this newspaper was passed down through numerous generations before the last owner contacted our business, presuming it would be of great interest to us given our specialty in early and rare newspapers. This is the complete, genuine four page newspaper. Newspapers from the 1700's were made of a high cotton/linen content which allows them to survive to this day. It measures 8 1/4 by 14 1/4 inches. This newspaper was never bound nor trimmed. It has sustained some damage through the years, as the two right corners and the bottom left corner appeared to have been nibbled by mice, causing some loss of text (see photos). About five words of the "Crisis" text on page 1 are affected, and approx. 25 words on pg. 2 are affected. There are also some small wear holes at the top portion of the central fold which affect 4 words of the "Crisis" text on the ftpg. only. Other rubbing & some browning at folds.
