Up for sale is a new print of an 1869 plug tobacco label. These labels are some of most collectible pieces of Americana ever produced. These were originally lithographs and used to mark crates, containers and packages of tobacco. The labels were among the earliest attempts at creating brands. The economic well-being of many tobacco farmers was at stake in the successful marketing of these tobacco products. Pressing cured tobacco leaves with a sweet molasses style syrup made plug tobacco. Once a hand process, this was later done between large tin sheets. This label for R. Wilson & Co has a very soft, very innocent image. The label shows a little girl dressed in white nightgown, with blue trim, powdering her cheek with a large powder puff. Even in its earliest days, tobacco was scorned as evil and immoral. Here was a chance to project a different look. At the time of the production of this label, the civil war had just ended. Tobacco had been largely a southern commodity grown in the Carolinas and Virginia, among other states. However, Ohio grew tobacco during this period and this label is for R. Wilson of Cincinnati, Ohio. Strobridge & Company, Cincinnati, Ohio, produced the original stone lithograph upon which this print is based. This print is on a quality 100# high glossy text paper. The poster measures 7.75†(w) X 16.5 (h). It has a small border to allow for framing. This is perfect for a standard 16†x 20†frame, a manageable size for a variety of decorating purposes.
