Description

THANK YOU FOR VIEWING THIS AUCTION                                                               About me: Living in Florida, especially in the Tampa,St.Petersburg area has given me great opportunities to treasure hunt.I go to estate sales, garage sales, antique malls and auction houses. As with every Sunday count on me being at the flea market by 6:30 am.I have done this for over 20 years now.I have hoarded to where I can not hoard no more. So,I am offering for the first time these collector items on ebay. I hope you enjoy bidding on and  looking at the things I have collected over the years. Good Luck and Happy Bidding... Up for Auction here is:   A U.S.Great coat button found at Fort Brooke circa 1820's -1830's.I found this early U.S. Great Coat button metal detecting in downtown Tampa at the former site of Fort Brooke.Fort Brooke was exant from 1824-1880.Fort Brooke was at that time the largest military fort in the United States. The first in a series of forts built during the Seminole Indian Wars. This early U.S.Great Coat button excavated at Fort Brooke has a nice even surface patination. There is some light surface oxidation. This button has not been cleaned and is exactly as found. The button has very fine details. The shank on this highly sought after button is missing(see photos). These button were worn on the heavy coats the Fort Brooke soldiers wore during those cold winter days and nights. These buttons were in fact partially responsible for many of those U.S.soldiers killed at the Dade Massacre on December 28th 1835.108 U.S.troops under Major Francis Dade left Fort Brooke on their way to Fort King when they were ambushed by 180 Seminole Indians.Major Francis Dade was the first to be killed.Only a few managed to get to their flintlock rifles from under their heavy winter coats.Only three men survived the attack.A nice example of this highly sought after U.S.Great Coat button from historic Fort Brooke.  ****Please see my other auctions for more artifacts, coins, antiques, collectables and other items of interest.
