Or maybe just a decorative item with a lid? Looks like it could have been from some kind of a set of the nursery rhyme "Three Little Pigs"? It stands about 7 1/2" overall, base is about 3 1/2" x 4 1/2"; lid has a rim that fits semi-snugly down into the head portion, somewhat sealing the contents (the reason we thought it could be tobacco), base is marked "Japan"; it is in overall great condition--has scattered small maker's flaws as is commonly found on the vintage Japanese export items, no real damage as far as major wear, no chips or cracks; has glaze crazing on the lower piece what looks like a ring of wear on the top of the brim, kind of odd how it could wear in the grooved area but maybe the glazing was thin to begin with and cleaning over the years wore it down? A cute piece for the pig lover or figural jar collectors--regardless of what you decide to use it for!Using the "super size picture" feature will enlarge the pictures for full item detail--email before bidding if you need more pictures or information.
