Until the construction of the bridge, people from the south of the St. Lawrence River could enter Quebec City only by ferry boat. The first design of the bridge failed in 1907 during construction and 75 workers were killed. This book came from the estate of a gentleman who was an army engineer during WWI - I'm unsure if he had anything to do with this project, but it is possible. The cover of this book reads "Volume XXXII Part A Transactions of the Engineering Institute of Canada Incorporated 1867 as The Canadian Society of Civil Engineers being Plates to accompany Text of Part I. Papers Descriptive of The Quebec Bridge Montreal 1919". The book contains 117 "plates" or diagrams, most of them are fold-out drawing. Unfortunately, I don't have the accompanying volume with the text description of each drawing, but an engineer will be able to interpret the drawings. The book measures 9" by 12" with a thickness of 7/8" - it weighs 2 lbs and 9 oz. Unfortunately, the cover is detached and really not in good condition at all - the interior drawings, however, are for the most part, in very good condition. The building of the Quebec bridge was an important historical event, so this is an interesting collectible, especially for someone interested in bridge engineering - as a result of the collapse, the power of the engineer came under scrutiny and it resulted worldwide in the formation of professional engineering groups/organizations with rules and regulations….please click on any photo in order to enlarge….and please check my other auctions for a couple of other books on bridges…..
