This is really an extraordinary and unique gambling and gum ball machine. We believe it was made during the early 1900's. It is of an Art Deco design and well built! The outside of the machine appears to be all original and is in very good condition. All the glass is still in tact as seen in the photo's. Inside appears to be all original parts and pieces and is exceptionallly clean and in very good working order. The back door is made of neavy plated steel and is in very good condition with original lock and key. There is also a small door on the back for loading gum balls into the machine. It is 12" tall x 9" wide x 8 3/4" deep. Near the top of the machine there is a glass window that displays 3 wheels similar to a slot machine. They show cigarette packs of Lucky Strike, Camels, Chesterfield, Old Gold, Raliegh and Spudds on each spinning wheel. The front center of the machine also displays 3 packs Lucky Strikes, Camels, Chesterfield, Old Gold, Raliegh and Spudds in a row. The bottom left corner of the machine has a push rod and above it reads: "Push For Gum". To operate the machine you insert a penny into the 1cent slot, press lever down, the wheels will spin. When the wheels stop spinning, if there are 3 Lucky Strikes, Camels, or Chesterfields, you win 1 pack of cigarettes. If there are 3 Old Gold in a row you win 2 packs. If there are 3 Raleigh you win 4 packs. And if there are 3 Spudds in a row you win 10 packs of cigarettes. Of course the machine does not contain cigarettes so the cigarettes would be given to the winner by the store clerk. Even if you didn't win any cigarettes you would push the push rod in the front of the machine and recieve a gum ball for your penny.. This machine was ingeniously designed. When you insert the penny and pull the handle down it drops the penny onto a little shelf inside the machine. That triggers a mechanism that releases one gum ball at a time. the penny stays there until the next penny is inserted. When another penny is inserted and the lever is pulled down a small lever kicks the previous penny onto the floor of the machine. If someone tried to tell the clerk that they put a penny in and didn't get a gum ball or the machine didn't work, then the clerk could look on the side of the machine where there is a little window and could see if a penny had been inserted into the machine or not. If there was no penny there then he would know that they had not inserted a penny. Also on the bottom of the machine there's a spring loaded brackett that automatically pops out when the machine is lifted up. This mechanism locks all the wheels and internal parts of the machine to prevent someone from tilting or shaking the machine in order to win cigarettes or receive a gum ball without paying for it. Like I said, ingenious!!! It uses gum balls the size of a regular marble. It weighs about 20 lbs.
