First published in 1911 and long out of print, this book clearly demonstrates that decorative machine embroidery did not originate with the advent of the computerized zigzag sewing machine. On the contrary, every delicate piece of embroidery illustrated was done entirely on a straight-stitch treadle sewing machine. This Singer book comprises of 125 lessons, each focusing on a different technique and progressing from elementary decorative stitches to the creation of such fine lace and decorative embroidery forms as Hedebo, Valenciennes, Teneriffe, and Cluny lace, velvet applique, beadwork, and even embroidery on wood veneer. This edition includes the advantages of using the Electric Machine ( impossible for the machine to run backwards , etc). Fantastic addition to any collection. Wonderful , if you would like to accomplish trims and decorations for your home. Myself , I treasured this book for the pictures and admiration for the home makers that really did this type of work on their machines. I never had the courage to try. Maybe the next owner will.
