The box is made of wood and has 4 drawers. Each drawer is labeled - "Buttons", "Hooks & Eyes", "Pins & Needles" (lettering is not as dark as the other drawers), and "Utilities" - and each drawer has a hand-painted floral decoration (the large drawer has two). These decorations look as if the outline for the design was applied with a woodburning kit, then hand-painted within those lines. The top shelf of the box has 8 small, circular indentions and a larger, circular spot worn into the wood. These places look as if they may have been where spools of thread were kept and possibly attached there at one time. There are 2 tiny holes at the top of the box's back where the box can be hung up on a wall. The wood on the back of the box also looks like it has some light glue residue...evidently, the little holes in the top didn't provide enough stablization for the previous owner. Part of the main body of the box is fitted together with tongue & groove joints, part of the box is not. There are no cracks or splits in the box or in any of the drawers. The outer edges of the back of the box are a bit rough to the touch. The finish on the top shelf and edges of the box shows alot of wear, but the finish on the front (drawers) and sides of the box is in better shape. The box stands approx. 6" tall at its highest point, is approx. 8-1/2" wide, and is approx. 3-1/2" deep, not including the drawer knobs. The 3 top drawers measure approx. 2-3/8" wide, 2-3/4" from front to back, and are 1-5/8" deep. The large bottom drawer measures approx. 7-3/4" wide, 2-3/4" from front to back, and is 1-5/8" deep. These measurements do not include the face of the drawer or the drawer knob. The underside of the box is stamped in black: "No. 6674", and then there's either a couple of tiny smudges or something very small that I can't read, and then "JAPAN". I have not attempted to clean this box and it is a bit dusty at the angles where the top shelf, sides, and back meet, but the box looks as if it would clean up easily. Overall, this is a very nice old sewing box and would make a great addition to any vintage sewing collection.
