McKinley†while presidential candidate, 1/3 page, 8vo [8-1/4 in. x 5-5/16 in.], on stationery imprinted with his name and address, Canton, Ohio, March 18, 1896. Only three months prior to the Republican Convention where he was nominated for President on the first ballot, he writes David Pell Secor in Bridgeport, Conn.: “For your encouraging letter of the 17th inst. please accept my sincere thanks.†Two ink corrections in McKinley’s hand. Affixed to same size album page. Mounting traces at outer edges, with light age-toning, otherwise in good condition. Letter bears a large McKinley signature. Ideal for display. Ohio’s favorite son William McKinley [1843-1901], the twenty-fifth President of the United States [Republican, 1897-1901] was assassinated by anarchist Leon Czolgosz. He had been elected to the presidency in 1896 primarily because of his vow to restore prosperity to the nation. As President, he presided over the U.S. victory in the Spanish-American War and the acquisition of a sprawling overseas empire. He was a champion of high tariffs and the gold standard.
