Description

WW2 AFRICAN AMERICAN HERO DORIE MILLER PRINT The2FunAdGuyz offer a new, high-quality reproduction print of a 1943 World War II art recruitment poster for the US Navy, produced after the Pearl Harbor Attack of December 7, 1944. An African-American sailor and hero of Pearl Harbor, Doris “Dorie” Miller, is the subject of the poster. Miller was a mess-attendant and a champion Navy boxer aboard the USS West Virginia when the Japanese attacked Battleship Row. Without any training on the weapon, Miller fired the 50 caliber machine guns until ammunition ran out—hitting at least three Japanese attack planes. He also heroically moved his mortally wounded executive officer to a safer position. For a while after the attack, the hero was unidentified. After his id, a campaign launched to gain him the Congressional Medal of Honor but the Secretary of Navy thwarted that attempt. Miller received the Navy Cross and this poster resulted. After returning to the United States for a War Bond tour, Miller returned to naval duty. He died when his ship, the USS Liscome, sank. David Martin Stone, one of America’s top tier artists, created the poster. Martin used a powerful image of the proud, strong-jawed Dorie Miller in front of a portion of a deep dark sea with images of the sunken ships at Pearl Harbor. This powerful, patriotic image can be used in the decor of a home bar, pub, library, or game room.
