WWI SCOTTISH BRITISH ARMY POSTER KILT LAWSON WOODSThe2FunAdGuyz offer a new print a stunning 1914 World War I Scottish recruitment poster for the units Scotland raised for the British Army, many of which were sent to Belgium. Lawson Woods did the artwork that features a soldier in the traditional Scottish Kilt, standing at a Belgian street corner. Of course the ferocious fighting skills of Scottish military units are legendary and have been the pride of Scotland for centuries. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: At the start of World War I, the advertising poster, thanks to the development of stone lithography, had become a dominant advertising form and was quickly adapted to the recruitment of soldiers. Since many popular artists were already involved in poster art, they produced hundreds of posters creating incredible images. Britain’s treaty with Belgium had been the basis for the Empire’s entry into the war. The German atrocities perpetrated on the Belgian civilian population during the invasion and occupation had shocked every country, especially those of the British Empire. Belgian duty was a popular and the country was a much-desired destination for the men of Scotland. DESCRIPTION: A proud Scottish soldier in full Scottish uniform, including the traditional kilt, stands on a street corner in a Belgian village. His bayonet is fixed on his rifle, ready for whatever is around the corner. HEADLINE: Your King & Country Need You To Maintain The Honour And Glory Of The British Empire. CAPTION: A Wee "Scrap O' Paper" Is Britain's Bond. ARTIST: Lawson Woods, a popular English artist and illustrator, did the work. Woods himself served as a World War I officer in the Kite Balloon Wing of the British Army’s Royal Flying Corps. This unit performed one of the war's most dangerous tasks. Using balloons as perches, these daring men spotted German planes. Wood undertook the assignment with such gallantry that the French decorated him for his service. As an artist, Woods painted animals performing human tasks. “Merry Monkeysâ€, one of his works, is often reproduced to this day. ORIGINAL MEDIA: Dobson, Molle & Co. Ltd., Color Printers, Edinburgh & London did the original lithograph on which this print is based. The Parliament Recruiting Committee, London, produced the original poster.
