TAFT WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS TO WASHINGTON D.C.’S EXCLUSIVE UNIVERSITY CLUB WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT (1857-1930). Taft was the Twenty-Seventh President, serving from 1909 to 1913, and Supreme Court Chief Justice, from 1921 to 1930. Commerce was a focus of his administration, as he strengthened the Interstate Commerce Commission and broke the American Tobacco and Standard Oil trusts. DS. 1pg. 8 ½†x 11â€. No Date. No Place. A partly printed certificate of membership signed “Wm. H. Taft†as President of the University Club of Washington, DC. In part: “The University Club, of the City of Washington, District of Columbia, upon his application and agreement to conform to its Charter and By-Laws, among which is the following: “Such Certificate of Membership in the University Club, of the City of Washington, District of Columbia, shall be non-transferable and non-negotiable for any purposes whatsoever, and any right or interest in the corporate assets of said Club, which a man may have or which his estate might otherwise have, by virtue of his membership or the possession or ownership of such certificate, shall upon his resignation or expulsion from said Club, or upon his death, forthwith cease, and shall thereupon revert to the said Club.†Established in 1904, Taft, who was then the Secretary of War, was elected the University Club’s first President, having already been an active club member. Under his leadership, the organization grew rapidly. The document is in fine condition, and all of the fill-in sections are blank except for Taft’s signature.
