Burton     Original Photograph Album of Norway Album Title: Norge [Norway] Photographer: James Valentine A scarce collection of 22 original captioned photographs taken in Norway by celebrated Scottish photographer James Valentine, circa 1890's. Presented in an oblong octavo album, with twenty photos mounted on heavy gilt-edged album carstock, and two additional photographs loosely laid within. Vivid images feature the historic city of Bergen, a stave church near Bergen, Voss Railway, Suldal Lake, Hardanger, Naerodal Pass, Naero Fjord, Merok Geiranger Fjord, the Seven Sisters, Romsdalhorn, the Trolltinderne, Molde, Leerfos Trondhjem, Raftsund, North Cape, Valley of Desolation, and Barden Tower. Photos measure approximately 14,5cm x 21cm (5.75 inches x 8.25 inches), each separated by protective leaf bound in. Original red gilt tooled cloth. Boards worn and loose but holding, otherwise a pleasing collection of antique nostalgic photographs. James Valentine was a well-known photographer of Dundee, Scotland. Valentines of Dundee produced Scottish topographical views from the 1860s, and later became internationally famous as the producers of picture postcards. Valentine views in the nineteenth century aimed at the national middle and upper class tourist market, with the production of both drawing room albums containing selections of photographs arranged geographically and individual landscape prints. They competed with Francis Frith and George Washington Wilson, who were producing pictures of similar quality. Landscapes were available in a choice of sizes - cabinet, imperial and card. Stereoscopic views were also produced. Subjects concentrated on tourist sights in Scotland, then to England in 1882 and on to fashionable resorts abroad, including Norway, Jamaica, Tangiers, Morocco, Madeira and New Zealand before 1900.   Powered by eBay Turbo ListerThe free listing tool.
